This amulet of Phra Ham Yath (the Monday Buddha) is released from Wat Phra Pathommachedi Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, a temple in the town center of Nakhon Pathom Province. Phra Pathom Chedi, meaning the 'First Stupa,' is 50 km west of Bangkok. Nakhon Pathom Province is Thailand's oldest place of worship. It was built in the days of King Asoka, who sent missionaries to propagate the Buddhist faith in this part. Archaeological scholars unanimously agree that Monk Sonathera and Monk Utrathera, the ministers, first made Nakhon Pathom their base of religious propagation around the 3rd Buddhist century.
Initially, the pagoda was built as an Indian-style stupa shaped like an upside-down bowl. Subsequently, its form was changed by restorations. Approaching the site from the North Gate leads to a marble staircase, a massive, standing golden Buddha known as Phra Ruang Rojanaridhi - Phra Ham Yath (Buddha image for Monday), the day of making peace. Buddha images represent moments in the Buddha's life. Thai people always respect their particular Buddha images that match their days of birth. With his transcendental powers, he caused heavy rain to pour down, so severe that it cleaned the city of all dead bodies and uncleanliness.
