This Phra Somdej was supposedly made by Somdej Toh (Archan Toh) in 1870 as an offering to His Majesty King Rama 5; Phra Somdej got its name from the German wording "Kaiser," which means "Emperor." The legend says that King Rama 5 was visiting Europe to meet the last German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm (Kaiser). Kaiser noticed that King Rama 5 upper pocket seemed to be glowing with some colours, light shining. Kaiser then asked King Rama 5 what was in his pocket. The Majesty took out the amulet and showed it to Kaiser, explaining that it was a Buddhist amulet the Thai people would carry for protection against any harmful thing that may approach them.
Kaiser then expressed great interest in the amulet, and King Rama 5 offered it to Kaiser as a Royal Gift. Kaiser took the charm, paid respect to it, and put it in his upper pocket. A few moments later, the same light came out from Kaiser's pocket, and everybody was stilled with fear and wonder, causing great curiosity. Kaiser was impressed and filled with faith in the amulet. Thus caused Kaiser to be filled with respect and belief in the greatness and merits of King Rama 5, and because of this, King Rama 5 bestowed the amulet with the name Phra Somdej Kaiser.
